PADI Freediver

Pre-requisite

Have completed the PADI Basic Freediver course or have met the standard through a recgonised provider.

Course Structure

The structure of this course is designed to give you the practical skills to freedive safely in an open water environment to the depth of 16 meters.

Pre-requisite's

Must have previously completed the PADI Basic Freediver course, or have an equivalent qualification from a different agency. You must also hold a recent dive medical that states you are fit to dive.

Complete at your own pace

To be issued with the PADI Freediver certification you will need to complete two (2) separate  'verification dives' on board one of Victoria's premiere vessels. These dives run for around 2 hours from pick up to drop off, at least once a month (more in summer). These dives are heaps of fun, and you will be blown away at what freediving can offer you.

Although there are requirements to meet, please don't stress - for many students, this might be the first time they have ever been under the water or into the ocean. Our instructors take that into account and will always be patient and supportive of you throughout your journey as a freediver.

What you will learn

Session one:  For the first session, there will be a general brief on the dive site and what to expect when you hop into the water. From here there will be plenty of time to familiarize yourself with the environment and equipment; including how to correctly weight yourself for the session. Then we go onto the skills component which includes:

  • Free Immersion diving (FIM)

  • Constant Weight diving (CWT)

  • Working with a buddy

  • Correct breathing for freediving

  • Correct equalization during freediving attempts

  • Correct body position

  • Recovery breathing

  • Safety checks

  • Duck diving

  • Rescuing a diver simulating a loss of motor control (LMC) at the surface

Once you are comfortable with the skills listed above, this is where you may wish to perform a 'Constant Weight dive' to 10 meters deep. During this attempt, your instructor will remind you that it is not all about reaching the target depth; rather, displaying the correct technique and diving in a relaxed manner.

Session two: Will work on re-enforcing what you have learned in session one, give you advanced techniques, take you to 16 meters and work more effectively with a buddy.

General Itinerary

Each verification dive will depart either Queenscliffe or Portsea pier (sometimes both) on the previously scheduled day. Please arrive approximately 20 minutes prior to departure and put on all the required freediving gear for the day. Once boarded, there will be a general briefing by the captain of the vessel followed by the 'dive plan' by the freediving instructor. In water time runs for approximately 1.5 hours; double dives can also be booked.

Where too from here?

Being a certified freediver is a requirement to book onto any 'freediver boat trips' run by any reputable vessel operator. The 'PADI Freediver' certificate enables you to dive safely up to 16 meters depth.

If you are interested in going deeper and extending your knowledge of freediving, then you may like to consider upgrading to the 'PADI Advanced Freediver' course which will take you up to 24 meters.

* if you have not completed the PADI Basic freediver course with GnoMAD an additional $35 AUD may be required to purchase the PADI certification materials.
