Learn the basics to get into the ocean safely!

Course Structure

 

This course focuses on giving participants the theoretical understanding and practical skills that are required to safely begin shore diving. 

Course Delivery:

Blended delivery,

  • theoretical component (4 hour theory)

  • 2 - 3 hour shore dive session 

(Shore dive is subject to safe diving conditions; shore dive may be postponed until a later date if deemed unsafe for the day). 

You should expect to invest approximately 8 - 10 hours to cover all sessions and material  thoroughly. 

Prerequisite 

  • 16 years of age minimum

  • Subject to medical clearance 

  • Liability waiver

  • Comprehensive introduction to shore diving equipment

  • Safe breathing techniques

  • Equalisation

  • Dive planning

  • Reading the weather 

  • How to choose a location to dive 

  • The basic physics and physiology of Freediving

  • Buddy diver procedures 

  • How to avoid Freediving emergencies

  • How to recognise and rescue a Freediver in an emergency 

  • Freediving skills training 

  • Hazards that may be encountered while shore diving

General Itinerary

Geelong Dive Center 9:30AM - 12:30PM

Participants first need to complete an online learning platform that will be supplied to them when booking in for the course, prior to the start date. On the day of the course, participants will meet at the Geelong Dive Center at approximately 9:30 AM. ​There will be a general presentation and knowledge review of the online component, followed by a practical skills session on breathing techniques and a 'how to' on the various freediving and breath hold equipment.

Lunch 12:30PM - 1:30PM

Geelong has a great range of local cafe's that offer any variety of food at a reasonable price.

 

Shore Dive 1:50PM - 4:50PM

This will be followed by a shore diving session that will be determined just prior to the date, depending on the weather and participant confidence/experience. Locations previously used have been; Torquay point, Split Point Lighthouse, Point Roadknight, St Leonard's, Cunningham Pier, Eastern Beach, Point Henry and others. 

Course Requirements

To be signed off as a PADI Basic Freediver (entry level course) participants will have to safely demonstrate:

  • Correct breathing techniques 

  • At least three 'correctly executed' static apnea attempts with one 90 seconds in duration. 

  • At least one dynamic apnea attempt of 25 meters.

  • The ability to swim 200 meters unaided, or 300 meters with fins + mask + snorkel. 

  • Rescue of a blacked out diver on the pool floor

  • Rescue of a blacked out diver / or diver in distress on the surface

  • Adherence to the 'safe freediver' criteria. 

  • Medically fit to dive 

  • Signing of a liability waiver 

Required Equipment

Please provide your own mask, snorkel, wetsuit (3mm), weight belt, weights and fins. Items can be purchased on the day from the Geelong Dive Cente or anytime beforehand. 

Course Cost

From $449 AUD; which includes:

  • Includes access to PADI Freediver touch online platform; an awesome tool with step by step video + written instruction that can also be accessed as a reference after the course is completed. 

  • Registration as a PADI Basic Freediver

  • Minimum 2.5 hour face to face theory review

  • Minimum 2.5 hour pool practice session

  • Pool admission fee's

Where too from here?

Once you have met the requirements for the PAD Basic Freediver course, continue your adventure and upgrade your qualification to the 'Freediver level' by completing two open water dives to standard. Once the open water sessions are completed, you will be qualified to dive up to 16 meters deep on any reputable vessel world wide.
